ark Burkhart, Supermoto Racer - Monster Energy Burhart Racing Team
Mark just returned from racing his first Proximus Superbiker event in Belgium in front of 30,000 supermoto-crazed fans. In wet conditions, Mark rode a smart race on his KTM 450 SX-F in the Finale this past Sunday and finished fifth overall from a field of over 400 riders from around the world. In the separate Supermoto Heats, he finished ninth overall with a tenth and ninth place finish. Mark picked up another silver medal to add to his collection at the X Games this year. He also finished the AMA Supermoto Championship in second overall in his first season running his own team. Mark enjoyed racing in Belgium so much he is now planning to finish out the last two rounds of the series in Italy and Spain with Italy's Motoracing Supermotard Team.

Burkhart Finishes 5th at Proximus Superbikers Finale

Advance, NC (October 16, 2009)
- Mark Burkhart, owner of the Monster Energy Burkhart HMC Racing Team raced in the Proximus Suberbiker event at the Circuit de Mettet in Belgium. Over 30,000 fans turned out despite less ideal weather conditions to see the 400 plus riders compete. Burkhart's best finish was a fifth in the Superbikers Finale event, in the two Supermoto races he finished 10th in race one and 9th in race two for a 9th overall.

"The Proximus Superbikers event was one of the coolest supermoto races I have ever been in. If there was ever a race that demonstrates the potential of supermoto as a spectator sport, this was it! It rained all day on Sunday and the people were still 8 to 10 deep around the whole track. They were reaching over the fences trying to touch us as we went by. There were more people on Friday and Saturday just watching practices than there has ever been at a race in U.S. The track was fast and hard to get used to; especially with a bike I had never ridden before. My borrowed KTM was good; it just took some time to get it dialed in. I would definitely like to have an opportunity to race more international supermoto events," commented Mark Burkhart.

Burkhart started off being tenth or eleventh fastest in Friday qualifying. The team made some adjustments to the bike and in qualifying on Saturday he got up to eighth fastest out of 400 riders. For Sunday's racing, it rained pretty much all day. Burkhart went out for his first heat race and it was dry. They did a warm-up lap and then it started pouring. All the riders got to change their tires to rain slicks and go race. Burkhart got a bad start and was around 20th out of the first two turns. Riders were crashing and riding very aggressively in the terrible conditions. Burkhart just sat back and watched for a couple laps then worked his way up to 10th. Race two was pretty much the same thing with Burkhart taking a 9th place finish.

The final race proved to be much better for Burkhart. He got a good jump on the start, considering he was on row four and starting in 16th. He was with the lead guys going into the first turn. The leader crashed and took out almost everyone with him. Burkhart went through the second  turn in seventh and passed Josh Coppins on lap one, then he passed another person on lap two. He rode the whole race in fifth and at one point was closing in on fourth. He finally settled in and was trying to avoid making any mistakes that would jeopardize a decent finish in his first ever race at the Proximus Superbikers event.

Lazzarini Tops X Games Supermoto, Burkhart charges to Silver in SuperMoto X  The X Games 15 SuperMoto X final went off at the Home Depot Center today, and a fast, fairly simple course was a marked change from X Games Supermoto races of the past. Without heavily complex rhythms in the dirt sections of the course, favor fell more toward the European Supermoto racers rather than those of a Supercross background, and the results showed it. >> read more from Cycle News

Burkhart Finishes 2009 Season in Second Place

Advance, NC (September 8, 2009) - Mark Burkhart, owner of the Monster Energy Burkhart HMC Racing Team finished the 2009 XTRM AMA Supermoto Series in second place overall. Despite setting the fastest qualifying time and race lap times, Burkhart was unable to translate his blazing speed on the track into another Championship title.

In moto one, it was a crash early in the race when he lost the rear end of the bike on the asphalt that dropped him back to twelfth place. He worked his back from twelfth to finish in fourth.

In moto two, Burkhart stalled his bike while running in second place. By the time the bike restarted he was in dead last and had to fight his way back to finish third and on the podium.

"This is going to go down as one of my craziest seasons ever. All year I had the speed to be at the front, but my sense of balance was not where it needed to be and I ended up spending too much time on the ground to win the championship. While I am okay with taking second place, I am too much of a competitor to be happy with anything less than a championship. I learned a great deal this year as I transitioned from racer to racer and team owner; I would not trade that experience for anything. I am looking forward to coming back next year with more experience as a team owner and get back to racing for the win," commented Mark Burkhart.
